And so, with this selection of quotations from almost all the books of the Bible (excepting Esther, Joel, Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, and 2 John, due to the particular sources at my disposal), I’m bringing this blog of quotations from the great 19th-century Baptist preacher and author, Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), to an end.

Despite no further posts, I’m leaving the blog up for the enjoyment of those who value Spurgeon’s ministry – he speaks, even though he is dead. Feel free to join me at my other blogs: “Reiterations” (www.reiterations.wordpress.com), “Centuries of Meditations” (www.traherne.wordpress.com), and “Brain Mumbles” (www.brmum.wordpress.com). Another blog I’ve stopped, “Triumphant Certainties,” containing quotations from that other great 19th-century Baptist preacher and author, Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910), is also available for reading: www.alexandermaclaren.wordpress.com.

Enjoy.

If you are not what you ought to be, I beseech you: do not make a profession. And, if you have made a profession and have dishonored it, humble yourselves in the sight of God and go, once more, to the fountain filled with blood, for there is forgiveness and mercy for you still. Jesus will willingly receive you, even though you have done Him such despite. Return, as a prodigal son to the father’s house, and you shall find the fatlings killed for you and the best robe put upon you. As we are getting near the close of the year, earnestly pray that, if anything in the time past has been evil, it may suffice us to have wrought the will of the flesh. And now, henceforth, in the new year, may we live in newness of life and enjoy, together, the sweet privilege of hearing that our children walk in truth, while we, ourselves, through grace, are walking in it, too, and the church is built up and multiplied by the Spirit of truth. May the Lord bless you all, for Jesus Christ’s sake. – “The Parent’s and Pastor’s Joy” (3 John 4), December 21, 1873
