And so, with this selection of quotations from almost all the books of the Bible (excepting Esther, Joel, Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, and 2 John, due to the particular sources at my disposal), I’m bringing this blog of quotations from the great 19th-century Baptist preacher and author, Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), to an end.

Despite no further posts, I’m leaving the blog up for the enjoyment of those who value Spurgeon’s ministry – he speaks, even though he is dead. I bless God that, for some little time, instead of worrying myself about a thousand things which concern this church – and the college and the orphanage and the colportage – whenever I have any sort of trouble, it has been my sweet privilege to breathe a prayer to God and leave all my anxieties at His feet. I do the best I can to keep things right, and then I leave them with the Lord. If these works are not His work, then let them go to pieces. If they are, then He will attend to them. I am an instrument in His hands and, as such, I do the little I can do and leave the rest to Him. Spurgeon Through the Bible, 60 – 1 Peter

In this epistle, Peter is speaking of the scattered saints in all parts of the world and, taught by the Holy Spirit, he says, of them, that they were “an holy priesthood.” He is not talking about ministers. He is not speaking of a certain number of men who have passed through diverse grades of office and are, thereby, qualified to wear robes of a certain color, but he is speaking of every believer, and he calls every saint a member of “an holy priesthood.” Every Mary and every John, every peasant girl and every laborer who puts his hand upon the plough, every servant of God in every capacity, is a member of this “holy priesthood” – at least, so Peter says, and Peter was not mistaken, for he spoke as he was “moved by the Holy Spirit.” – “The Priesthood of Believers” (1 Peter 2:5), August 28, 1864

Let us cultivate a large-hearted spirit and sympathize with the people of God, especially new converts, if we find them in trouble through past wrong-doing. If anything needs setting right, do not let us condemn them off-hand, and say, “You have been stealing from your master, have you? You profess to be converted, but we do not believe it.” Such suspicious and severe treatment may be deserved, but it is not such as the love of Christ would suggest. Try to set the fallen ones right and give them, again, as we say, “a fair start in the world.” If God has forgiven them, surely we may; and, if Jesus Christ has received them, they cannot be too bad for us to receive.
